Arbors FAQs

What are arbors?

Arbors are a type of plant structure that can be made from either threes or fours. They are generally built around a line, but they may also have posts on the outside for decoration.

What types of lines do arbors need?

Arbors usually use a line with tension on it to hold up the arbor. Lines that work well for arbors include:

  • Heavy line (3/8" or larger) with tension on it, such as a dock line. This is the most common type of line used for an arbor and is often less expensive than other types.
  • Braided polyester rope (grapevine normally works well for this)
  • Webbing (often used with posts instead of a line running through the center)
  • Poles lashed together (usually not sufficient by itself to hold up an arbor, but can be reinforced using any of the above options).

How much weight can an arbor hold?

This depends on several factors: (1) the type of line and how it's attached, (2) the size and frequency of winds in your location, (3) if there is tension or compression on the line, and (4) whether there are additional materials such as posts used to reinforce the structure. If you've never built an arbor before, we recommend using a line with tension on it and building a test structure first.

Can I attach my arbor to my house or other structures?

Yes! Arbor designs often look best when they're attached to other objects such as decks, stairs, trees, and walls.

How far away from my house should I site my arbor?

Arbors can be located anywhere on your property, but we recommend putting them at least 5ft (1.5m) away from structures such as decks or windows. This allows you to open the structure for optimal wind flow without worrying about it coming into contact with anything.

Where should my arbor attach to the line?

Almost anywhere on your arbor will work as long as it's structurally sound and won't collapse or fall over if the wind blows against it. Some good attachment points include: (1) along a horizontal beam, (2) near an upright post, (3) at the center of an upside-down U-shaped beam where the line crosses, and (4) at any point along a vertical post.

What materials can I use to build my arbor?

Almost anything will work as long as it's relatively strong for its size and weight. Common materials include: bamboo or other thick poles, wood beams, PVC or other plastic piping, and metal pipe.

Can I use a structure that's already on my property instead of building a new one?

Yes! Many arbors are built around structures such as trees or deck railings. If you have access to these types of structures but aren't sure if they will work, feel free to send us photos so we can help you figure out what will and won't work.

How do I attach my line to my arbor?

One of the easiest ways to attach a line is simply wrapping it around a post or pole several times and tying it with a couple square knots. However, doing this will allow the line to slip if there's any tension on it. Many arbors use a special type of knot called a larks head (see Arbor Knots for instructions) to attach their line. It's not as easy to adjust, however, and you won't be able to untie it once it's pulled tight.

Can I put a tarp over my arbor?

Yes, you can. We recommend using one of the following methods to secure it: (1) by attaching it to the top of your arbor (using larks heads or slip knots), (2) with bungee cords or shock cords attached to both sides of your arbor and hooked onto something on each side, or (3) by using poles to make a frame around your arbor.

Can I plant shrubs or flowers around my arbor?

Yes, you can! You can also add other decorations such as lights and wind chimes. Just make sure the arbor is large enough to accommodate these items when it blows open.

What are some good shrubs or flowers to plant around my arbor?

We recommend shrubs such as rosemary, lavender, and fig. Flowers such as marigolds and snapdragons also work well.

Should my arbor match the architecture of my house?

No! You can build your arbor with almost any type of design you like. Just keep in mind that the sturdier and more tightly closed it is, the less likely it is to blow open.

Where should I mount my wind chimes if I'm using an arbor?

A good place to mount a wind chime is on the top of your arbor. You can either attach it directly to the beam with a slip knot or slide it between two posts and tie it around one of these posts using a larks head (see Arbor Knots for instructions).

What is the difference between an arbor, a trellis, and a pergola?

An arbor sits horizontally and is curved or bent at the top, whereas a trellis and pergola stands upright. A trellis is usually built with wooden beams, though metal ones may also be used, and has openings in it so you can grow small vines such as ivy through it.

What materials are preferred for arbors?

Recommended arbor materials include: bamboo or other thick poles, wood beams, PVC or other plastic piping, and metal pipe.

How deep do the arbor posts need to be?

Arbor posts should be as deep as possible to make it less likely that the wind will blow your arbor over. It's best to have these posts dug several inches below ground if you live in an area where high winds are common. The more firmly packed dirt is, the better it is at withstanding a lot of force from the wind.

Is it possible to add a gate to my arbor?

Yes, you can add a gate to your arbor. If you want the gate to stand upright like a normal one, make sure it's hinged at the top and bottom (see instructions for Building Wooden Gates ). If you want the gate to act more like an opening in the arbor that doesn't swing shut, use bungee cords or shock cords to hold it open.

If I build my arbor using wood, can I paint it?

Yes, you can paint your arbor if you want to! Just use a waterproof exterior paint so that the wood doesn't get ruined if it gets wet. You may also want to use a primer first because some types of wood have chemicals that prevent paint from sticking to it.

Do arbors stop working if there's a storm?

No, arbors are not designed to keep your yard safe during bad weather, so please evacuate if severe conditions are likely. If you're using an arbor with bamboo poles or other natural materials, they may break over time, so it's best not to use them if you live in an area where strong winds are common.

Is there any other material I can use to build my arbor?

Yes, you can build your arbor out of almost anything! Just keep in mind that the sturdier the better, since this will prevent it from blowing open.

Is it expensive to build an arbor?

No, building an arbor can be free or cheap if you build your own. If you're interested in buying one ready-made, it will probably cost $100-$200 depending on the size and style of the arbor.

Are arbors supposed to provide shade?

No, arbors are not designed to provide shade. If you want to add a shady space to your yard, consider building or buying a pergola.

How do I choose an arbor that's the right size, scale, and style?

When you're looking for an arbor, consider the overall look of your yard and how it fits in with your other garden structures. You may also want to check out potential sites where you can put your arbor before making a purchase so that you know if the one you buy will work well in that place.

What are the most common styles of arbors?

There are many arbor styles, but the most popular include:

  • Shade Arbors - designed to provide shade and shelter. They usually have a curved top so that they aren't very wide at the top and don't shade your eyes when you look through them.
  • Vertical Arbor - this type of arbor is made up of trellis-like panels that are usually staggered or angled to give it a unique look. They're taller than other types of arbors and stand upright instead of slanting outwards at the top.
  • Vertical Arbor Cover - this type of arbor is similar to a vertical garden but doesn't have multiple levels for plants. Instead, the panels are usually made of lattice and they're attached in such a way that they look like a fence or wall.
  • Arbor Cover - this type is similar to the vertical arbor cover but with fewer panels and more plants. Plants grow up through the openings in the panels, creating an attractive border around your yard with greenery in between.
  • Endless Arbor - this type of arbor starts at the top and curves downwards to create a tunnel-like effect. It's great for providing shade or growing vines that can change color depending on the seasons.
  • Recycled Garden Arbors - these usually have a rustic look and are made from a variety of recycled materials such as wine barrels, wooden crates, and whiskey barrels.
  • Water Arbor - this type of arbor has a fountain or water feature at the center so that you can enjoy relaxing in its shade while listening to the water splash!

Exceptional professional service and outstanding quality install by Bryan Ramirez and his crew! I couldn’t be happier with the work they preformed on my cedar wood privacy fence. I would highly suggest using College Station fencing for any of your fencing needs!
This company is amazing. Not sure why Dex Barber had to be so offensive in his review. Everyone makes mistakes and no company is perfect. But I can tell you Bryan is extremely responsive, careful and considerate of his customers. Dex Barber sounds like an entitled person who always has a problem with something. I'm writing this review because I've worked directly with Bryan I have multiple properties in Bryan College Station area that Bryan and his crew have done for me in the past years and have done an outstanding job with every project. I highly recommend Bryan and his crew 100%

I was very impressed and pleased with the work of Bryan and his crew at College Station Fencing. I called him based on a small sign I saw on a fence he had recently installed in my neighborhood. I called and he visited that afternoon to give me a bid. He provided a fair and good price. Then, he was able to get the work done that week. Nice quality work. We had an issue about how to do a part of the fence and he called me to discuss the best way to get around the problem. After we decided on a direction, he called me back a little later after figuring out a better solution that was actually much better and worked better for me. He did not need to go the extra mile, but he did so. I’m happy to enthusiastically endorse College Station Fencing.

Bryan and the crew were very respectful and on time. I had no problems working with him. He was able to come out of his way to complete a deer fence for my ranch. The pricing for the amount of work done and the travel were all done in a timely manner. We were over and beyond thrilled. Can not thank the crew enough for what they have done for me and my family. We were very pleased with the work done. I look forward to getting a custom gate for my residence with a key pad entry from him. 10 out of 10 recommend this company for anyone looking.

College Station Fencing replaced an old fence of ours. They were very professional from the time they came to give the quote, in between with emailing about questions and the workers that came out and did the work. They put up the fence fast and did a fantastic job. Also, their prices are fair and reasonable. Some fence quotes I received from other companies were absolutely astronomical! But College Station Fencing charges fair prices for their work. I would definitely use them again and recommend them highly.
